On The Road
Driving Programme

Starts May 11th 2009

On The Road Programme

On The Road is a motivational programme of support, training, personal development and action-planning with the principle aim of helping participants to access employment, education and training for young people aged 16-19 years.

The course will take place at Bellingham Gateway Youth and Community Centre over a ten-week period, and consists of 7.5 hours per week: Mondays 4-9pm (5hrs) and Saturdays 10.30-1pm (2.5hrs).

Integral to the course and a major incentive to participation is that the young learners will be tutored towards sitting their Driving Theory Test. Committed attendees will be walked through the steps necessary to apply for their provisional driving licence and theory tests with the administration costs for both of these processes met by the course.

Post training the young people classified as NEET and EET will receive regular follow-up sessions in order to provide support on issues and track ongoing progress.

The programme will:

  • Assess the needs of each individual through interview and one-to-one mentoring
  • Raise aspirations through workshops, mentoring and personal action-planning
  • Support individuals to pass the Driving Theory Test
  • Develop job-search, application CV writing and interview skills
  • Address emotional and confidence issues through mentoring and group activities
  • Reduce involvement in crime and anti-social behaviour by providing positive alternatives and role models
  • Sign-post and support participants to take the next step on their chosen progression
  • Introduce participants to alternative learning provisions

There is easy access to Bellingham gateway with frequent transport service from trains and buses.
